There are two levels of historic designation in the City of Minneapolis: local and national. Local designation is
administered by Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC), an advisory committee to the city council that is located
within the Planning Department. National designation is administered by the National Park Service (NPS) through the
Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Individual properties, as well as historic districts, can be both
locally and nationally designated.
Local designation in Minneapolis provides some protection for the building from demolition or alterations that could
