Renovating deteriorated historic structures in to viable new uses presents challenges and opportunities for developers. The West Hotel project tour provides a behind-the-scenes look at the work under way to redevelop 5 adjacent parcels of land in the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District – including the iconic Commutator Foundry and two other historic buildings – in to a new, integrated hotel, retail and event complex.
The project is designed by North Loop-based Snow Kreilich Architects, a leading national firm that received the prestigious 2018 AIA Architecture Firm Award. The interiors are designed by the internationally recognized firm Neri & Hu based in Shanghai. Neri & Hu was inducted into the U.S. Interior Design Hall of Fame in 2013.
The tour will highlight how the project design integrates the historic structures of the 19th and early 20th Century buildings with a new contemporary structure, while addressing the challenges of developing small urban land parcels in a historic district with building height restrictions and preservation requirements.
NOTE: This is a “hard hat” tour of an active construction site, requires climbing stairs and is not yet ADA accessible.
The tour guide is David Wilson.
